Thank you for your visit to the gallery at AZTEC STUDIOS. Our new weavings of abstract design at Mexican prices are at home either north or south of the border. These original designs weavings were inspired by Kandinsky, Matisse, Miro, and Chagall, among others. We open by appointment and also whenever you see our door ajar as this is a work/live space and we do not keep regular hours.
I have a passion for the mystique of Mexico which I adopted as my home eighteen years ago. Francisco, of indigenous heritage, was born into a family of weavers. The culture and life-style of a weaver is who he is, is in his blood. It was only natural that our work reflected the richness of prehispanic art whose history carries such color and intensity. But times have changed, and we have changed along with it.
Francisco and I work in true collaboration, as our art form could not exist one without the other. I do not weave, and he is color blind and does not create patterns. Although we are partners, each of our contributions to a weaving is done separately. It is often assumed that the making of a woven work of art is done in a sequence, when in fact, for us, the process of creating an original tapestry is more like shuffling cards.
As a painter, I would work on three canvases at the same time. Switching back and forth between them, for me, piqued the creative process, kept me from suffering the inertia that working on one peace can bring. I approach the making of weaving patterns the same way, with the same amount of serious concentration that I would give to any other art form. These patterns can take me a few days to complete, or they may take weeks.
We recently won another red ribbon at the 2016 annual Ajijic Society of the Arts annual judged show for BIRTH OF THE SUN, from our Cosmos Series.
Our change to Contemporary design has been met with enthusiasm. I have come full circle as it is so reminiscent of my Organic Abstractions as a young oil painter in Chicago so many years ago. Francisco is motivated as we now have clients buying these weavings to hang on their walls north of the border, as well as those invested in the Mexican culture here.
Yet, our evolution into the contemporary work we are now doing is sometimes interrupted by a desire to create another weaving motivated by Mexico's ancient past as seen in the tapestries below.
We are thrilled at our new success. Yet for old times' sake here is the link to our original YouTube video of Aztec Studios for you to see how much we have changed, and also, how hard it was for us to leave the excitement and primary colors that are Mexico. A few of these weavings are still among us and are for sale.
We look forward to seeing you. We're open by appointment and when you catch us, as this is a live/work place. JaniceKimballmx@gmail.com
